How Much Protein Do You Need for Longevity?

For longevity, most research supports eating 1.0–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — meaningfully above the 0.8 g/kg RDA, which was set to prevent deficiency, not to optimize muscle retention and healthy aging. Why is the RDA too low for healthy aging?

The 0.8 g/kg Recommended Dietary Allowance is the minimum to avoid negative nitrogen balance in young adults. It says nothing about the amount needed to preserve lean mass through the muscle loss of aging (sarcopenia). Older adults exhibit anabolic resistance — their muscles synthesize less protein from the same dose of amino acids — so they need more protein per meal to trigger the same muscle-building response (Breen & Phillips, Nutrition & Metabolism 2011).

Does high protein shorten lifespan?

Concerns come mostly from observational data in middle age. A 2014 analysis (Levine et al., Cell Metabolism) associated high protein intake with higher mortality in adults 50–65 — but the association reversed after 65, where higher protein intake was linked to lower mortality. The strongest interventional evidence shows adequate protein plus resistance exercise preserves the muscle and strength most predictive of independence in later life. Protein source matters too: plant and unprocessed animal proteins are consistently associated with better outcomes than processed meat.

How should you spread protein across the day?
